Mutations in the gene CSF-1R have been linked to a rare form of dementia called leukoencephalopathy. Instead of affecting microglia, as was earlier believed, this mutation affects macrophages and disrupts the blood-brain barrier. This study identifies a novel target that could be useful in developing therapeutics for other forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s.
